7.2 Billion Euros of Strikes, All Above the Market. Yesterday's Expiry Finding Was Arithmetic.

Today's New York cut carries 7.2 billion euros of optionality across four strikes and every one is above the market — the board has more than doubled overnight, from 3.35 billion, while spot has fallen further underneath it, and the largest single strike on the whole board, 2.5 billion at 1.1215, sits about ninety-five pips up. Second consecutive day the euro board has been out of reach, which is the opposite of what a rule reading "large expiries today, expect a pin" assumes. The yen board shrank 42 per cent to 4.074 billion and straddles the market, with 1.1 billion at 158.00. Two corrections of our own. We called yesterday's nearest euro strike "three and a quarter billion the market has walked away from" when the session had already traded two pips through it four hours earlier, on a range sitting in our own notes — above spot is an instant, walked away from is a session. And the structural finding we published yesterday, that no board expires after the event in its own currency, is for three of the four currencies a convention restated: the 10am New York cut is 14:00 UTC every day and the Fed announces at 18:00 every time. What survived was the Australian board, which crossed sessions. Pricing: the hold is now multi-sourced at 92.8, above 90 and about 91 per cent, closing a six-run single-sourced item. December does not agree — 84.4 against 82.5 from two readings of the same tool, where the second should be the larger, and just under 90 from a Tokyo note. Durable goods printed 1.8 against consensus figures of 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 and our own carried 1.8.

The One-Week Vol We Published at 10.00 Is 8.61. The Curve Is No Longer Inverted.

One-week dollar-yen implied volatility has fallen from the 10.00 per cent we published on Friday to 8.61 — a 1.39-point collapse, 7.3 times the one-month’s fall and 13.2 times the back end’s.

The curve is no longer inverted: the one-week is now the lowest point on it and the one-month, at 9.26, is the highest, which puts the market’s remaining worry between one week and one month out, where CPI, the FOMC, the Bank of Japan and the midterms all sit. At 8.61 a one-sigma day is 86 pips and Tokyo delivered 57. We also close the window hypothesis we labelled a guess on Saturday: one publisher carries both the full-day 158.22 high and the New York-session 157.91, on two different pages.

The Two-Year Closed Higher on a 61,000-Job Miss. Our Three-Feed Probability Spread Was One Feed on a Clock.

Friday’s 29,000 payrolls print missed the 27-analyst median by 61,000 and the two-year Treasury closed 3.3 basis points higher at 4.825 per cent, the ten-year 3.0 higher at 5.271 after a low of 5.1528.

We also retract Saturday’s claim that three feeds disagreed about the October Fed probability: all of them are CME FedWatch, and with timestamps attached the series reads 28, 12.9, 17, 21.59 and the low twenties — one feed on a clock, whose intraday round trip of 8.69 points was 1.36 times the net repricing. Dollar-yen made a new Tokyo high at 158.17 on a French bond story, and three coupons settle the day after CPI.

Verbal Intervention Bought 135 Pips. Tokyo Has Already Given Back 89 of Them.

Dollar-yen fell 135 pips to 156.51 on a finance ministry official's yen-weakness remark, and by the Tokyo open it had taken 89 of them back in the thinnest hours of the day.

The morning note explaining the rebound with rising crude is contradicted by the same session's oil tape, so we publish no oil level. The RBA at 04:30 is the session's only scheduled risk and it is not in your pair.

Tokyo Is Shut Until Thursday, and the Bank of Japan Checked Rates on the Way Out

USD/JPY opens the week at 156.68–156.96 with Tokyo shut for three days — and the last thing the Bank of Japan did before the holiday was ring dealers to check where the yen was.

Our Friday band for the high was 157.33 to a little above 157.80; the day printed 157.96 or 158.05 depending on which desk you read. Thursday is the day Tokyo reopens and the day the 1.25% takes effect.

We Said London Would Open on Friday's Expiry Map. The Monday Ladder Landed Two Minutes Before the Bell.

Yesterday this desk said no expiry ladder existed at 06:20 UTC and concluded London would open on Friday's map.

InvestingLive published the Monday ladder at 06:58:44 — two minutes before the bell. The observation was right and the inference was wrong. Four publication times now measured: 22:19 the night before, 05:01, 06:58:44, and nothing at all at 06:30 today. That is an eight-hour spread and no cadence at all. Plus: when the page does arrive, the notionals are inside an image. Size on the strike, not the notional.

USD/JPY Printed 155.00 and Gave Back 101 Pips Before Tokyo Opened — On Oil, Not on Japan

USD/JPY touched 155.00 overnight for the first time since 7 September and was back at 153.99 before the Tokyo open.

The chain that did it: a ship struck in the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia shutting its 7-million-barrel East-West pipeline, the US 10-year through 5% for the first time since 2023 — then four presidential posts that unwound the lot. Three publishers give three different highs for the same barrel, four dollars apart, and three feeds give the Fed hike at 85%, 90% and 93%. Tokyo opens at 154.36 with the spec book flat.

We Published $2.86 Billion at 154.00. The Same Publisher Said $3.06 Billion Seven Hours Later.

On Friday this desk published the 10:00 New York cut ladder — $2.86bn at USD/JPY 154.00, $2.74bn at 153.00, $1.66bn at 152.00.

The same publisher's second 11 September ladder, posted seven hours later under a different byline, says $3.06bn, $2.88bn, and carries no 152.00 line at all. Neither page is wrong, which is the problem. No ladder for today existed at 06:20 UTC, so London opens on Friday's map — and Tokyo has already run 153.37 to 154.14.

$2.86 Billion Expires at USD/JPY 154.00 and Spot Is at 154.08 — with CPI Ninety Minutes Before the Cut

The full 10:00 New York cut expiry ladder, with spot against it: $2.86bn at USD/JPY 154.00 with the pair trading 154.08, and EUR1.44bn at EUR/USD 1.1575 thirty pips below spot.

Tokyo traded 53 pips and 12 pips; Britain doubled its GDP consensus for about four. Plus the oil audit we owed you — our own four published Brent prices in 72 hours, and two vendors $3 apart this morning.

Treasury Sells 10-Year Paper at 17:00 UTC and Starts Buying the Long End Back the Same Day

London took the dollar index below 98.70 this morning and handed it all back by 10:49 UTC.

There is no 12:30 UTC release today. The dated event is the 10-year reopening at 17:00 UTC, against a 12 August stop of 4.683% and a cash 10-year at 4.81% — the eighth consecutive auction to clear higher, if it does. And Treasury's enlarged long-end buybacks start the same day.
