The Issuer Says 4.3. Two Vendors Say 3.9 Against a Consensus of 4.2. The Surprise Changes Sign.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics says the monthly consumer price index rose 4.3 per cent in the twelve months to September, up from 4.0 per cent.

Two publishers put that same row at 3.9 per cent against a consensus of 4.2, with the prior correctly at 4.0 — so a system that scores surprises by subtracting consensus from actual recorded a 0.3-point miss where the issuer gives a 0.1-point beat. The sign is opposite and nothing in the row looks broken, because 3.9 is not a random error: it is the quarterly annual figure, which both tables also carry correctly one row away. Yesterday this desk published that the 3.9-versus-4.2 consensus dispute was two releases in one minute rather than a disagreement, and that a mislabelled series would show no symptom because the two trimmed means agreed at 3.6. The print produced three symptoms in twenty minutes. On the only measure the Reserve Bank of Australia targets, one publisher headlined 3.6 and dead in line while the other headlined 3.7, above forecasts, hike case firming — same release, same minute, opposite verdicts — and the Bureau's own 3.6 matches the first publisher's quarterly row and neither publisher's monthly row. August's prior was revised to 3.5 and both vendors still carry 3.6. We publish the band and refuse the tenth. None of it moved the price: swaps went above 80 per cent for a November hike, Bullock said inflation will run above the August forecasts, and the Australian dollar rallied and stalled.

RBNZ RBA

The RBNZ Projected 2.81 for December. It Is 93 Per Cent Priced to Set 3.00 Tonight.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand's own September projection puts the official cash rate at 2.81 per cent in December 2026.

At 01:00 UTC today it is expected to set 3.00, and one reader puts money-market pricing of that hike at about 93 per cent — the issuer's published track is nineteen basis points under a level the market is near-certain arrives two months early. Forty-five minutes earlier, Australia prints against a Reserve Bank of Australia trimmed-mean forecast of 0.8 per cent that four major banks have already overshot at 0.9 to 1.0. Two central banks, two of their own numbers under the market's, both marked inside the same forty-five minutes. The Australian consensus is also 3.9 and 4.2 at once, and neither is wrong: the Bureau of Statistics releases the September quarter and the September month in the same minute under the same name, and the one field where they agree numerically — trimmed mean at 3.6 — is the field the central bank targets, so a mislabelled series shows no symptom. That is a seventh distinct broken calendar field in six weeks. Then the marking: American consumer confidence printed 91.7 against four published consensus figures spanning 1.2 points, beating all of them by 10.5 to 11.7, so the vendor dispute we have written about for weeks was one-tenth the size of the error — while a 2.3-point prior revision changed the move from 7.5 points to 9.8. New home sales fell 0.6 per cent on the month and beat consensus by four per cent. And the five-year auction is scored against the right tenor for the first time: 4.845 per cent, a 0.4 basis point tail against September's 3.1, with the dealer take down to 10.56.

The One Issuer That States Its Own Time Zone Has the Wrong Event Fifteen Minutes Before It.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics puts Wednesday's September-quarter CPI at 11:30am AEDT and states on the same page that all its times are Canberra time, so the print is 00:30 UTC.

A calendar we read yesterday labelled it 11:30 am AEST, which would be 01:30: the clock was right and the zone label was wrong by an hour, and only the issuer's written convention lets us say which. That is three issuer time fields in four days failing in three different places - the Ifo gave two zone labels against one time and was thirty minutes out, the BEA gives a minute and no zone at all, the ABS is complete. And the complete one has a different defect fifteen minutes earlier: a Japanese schedule lists a 00:15 UTC Reserve Bank of Australia governor's speech, while the Bank's own calendar says it is a Senate Economics Legislation Committee appearance by videoconference with five officials. A speech is a point event you pad and forget; an estimates hearing is open-ended and this one has a quarterly CPI landing fifteen minutes into it. The clock was right and the event type was wrong. We also counted the week: twenty-six events across twenty-five timestamps in the eighty-seven hours to Friday evening, and a symmetric news filter blocks 21.00 hours at thirty minutes and 34.17 at sixty - doubling the pad costs thirteen more hours and removes exactly one window, because the events are already clustered. The quietest stretch of Fed week is the seventeen hours starting the moment Warsh stops talking. Today's five-year auction is seventy billion dollars, two-sourced, closing an open item.

The Month-on-Month Is Agreed. The Year-on-Year Has Two Values 5.6 Points Apart.

Japan's August industrial production is agreed at −1.7% month-on-month by four publishers.

Two of them give the year-on-year as +3.4% and two give it as −2.2% — 5.6 points apart, opposite signs, same release. The consensus has three values. Australia's 4.0% CPI is a miss against the figure we published and a bullseye at FXStreet, and the Aussie sold off anyway. And the retail sales prior was revised, one day after we wrote the rule.

AUD USDJPY

Unanimous, Fully Priced, and the Aussie Finished 33 Pips Lower. The Statement and the Governor Did Not Agree.

The RBA hiked 25bp to 4.60% at 04:30 UTC, unanimously, with money markets at 93% going in.

An hour later Governor Bullock said maybe no more rises are needed — and AUD/USD finished Tokyo at 0.6978, 33 pips below where it stood before the hike. The written statement kept the tightening bias; the Governor withdrew it. And we refused to publish a hike probability yesterday: the series ended at 93%, so the refusal was right.

Verbal Intervention Bought 135 Pips. Tokyo Has Already Given Back 89 of Them.

Dollar-yen fell 135 pips to 156.51 on a finance ministry official's yen-weakness remark, and by the Tokyo open it had taken 89 of them back in the thinnest hours of the day.

The morning note explaining the rebound with rising crude is contradicted by the same session's oil tape, so we publish no oil level. The RBA at 04:30 is the session's only scheduled risk and it is not in your pair.

Dallas Fed RBA

The Release Printed at 14:30. Nine Hours Later the Only Place the Number Exists Is the Dallas Fed's Own Page.

The Dallas Fed printed 9.8 against a prior of 11.6 at 14:30 UTC — and six of the seven sub-indices underneath it rose, two by double digits.

Two calendars never carried the release and the one that had the time right still shows the actual as n/a. Yesterday's 4.5-billion-euro EUR/USD strike at 1.1400 was never traded. And the RBA at 04:30 is decided on the level and unsettled on the vote.

calendar PCE

Nothing Prints Today. Wednesday Prints Four Things in the Same Minute.

Monday 28 September carries no scheduled data release in the US, euro area, UK or Japan — five central-bank speakers and one 4.5-billion-euro option strike.

Wednesday puts core PCE, final GDP, personal income and personal spending in the same minute, on the last day of the quarter. And two calendars disagree about Lagarde by thirty minutes.
