Eight–One for 4%, Nine–Nil for "At Least 4%" — and the 5% Inflation Peak Has $108 Brent In It.

The Bank of England raised Bank Rate 0.25 points to 4% at 12:00 UTC on an 8–1 vote, and the one member against was Catherine L Mann, who wanted half a point and 4.25%.

So on "at least 4% today" the committee was nine–nil, seven weeks after voting 6–3 the other way. All six September holders switched — Bailey, Breeden, Dhingra, Lombardelli, Ramsden and Taylor — so the majority did not beat the hawks, it moved to them. We published the arithmetic five and a half hours earlier and said two of six had to switch, with a distribution from 5–4 to 9–0; the number landed inside it and the sign of the dissent did not, which is the same error as the RBA margin two days ago, one layer deeper and ours. The path: the Market Participants Survey median in the minutes has 4% in November and 4.25% in February — the same February step a 9 October money-market report gave, and the stale 81% is now closed by a prediction-market tracker at 98.5 cents on 3 November, up from 80.5 in September. The finding that matters: CPI printed 3.5% in September and is forecast to reach around 5% by mid-2027, and the minutes put Brent at $108 a barrel over the fifteen working days to 27 October — nine days before publication, and about $13 above the $94.6 Brent settled at yesterday. The Budget is worth a quarter point by 2027 Q2; the oil move is not in the forecast at all. Norges Bank held at 4.5% two and a half hours earlier and said it is still prepared to raise.

Today's Expiry Board Exists. One Publisher Has It, and the Sizes Are Behind a Paywall.

Twice in twenty-four hours this desk published that nobody had today's option expiry board.

It exists. DZH Financial Research put out six order-and-expiry items between 06:27 and 07:08 Japan time, one per pair, each tagging a New York cut dated today — and every notional is behind a paid membership, the exact inverse of the usual failure where the level is in prose and the size is locked in an image. The strikes: dollar–yen 158.00, euro–dollar 1.1230, sterling–dollar 1.3400, aussie–dollar 0.7000, euro–yen 177.10 with stop-loss selling below, sterling–yen 214.00 with sell orders. Six English publishers returned nothing — investingLive, Newsquawk, FXStreet, forexlive, Investing.com and fxterminal — so the sentence we should have written was "no English-language publisher we can open has one", and that is the second time in two days we have confused "we could not reach it" with "it does not exist". The sterling strike is the one that matters: 1.3400 sits 25 pips under a 200-day one wire puts at 1.3425 and 73 pips under its 1.3473 quote, with the Bank of England at 12:00 UTC and the cut three hours later at 15:00, so the strike is a level under a fresh breakout rather than a magnet above spot. The yen board names two cut dates and calls one extremely large, and tomorrow is payrolls. And the euro–yen stop cluster sits ten pips below the floor of one desk's own published forecast range.

The Bank of England Decided Yesterday. The Only Percentage Anyone Published Is Four Weeks Old.

The Bank of England is not deciding today — it decided yesterday.

The Bank's own September minutes say "the minutes of the Committee meeting ending on 4 November will be published on 5 November 2026", so 12:00 UTC is publication, not deliberation. Consensus is 4.00% from 3.75%, and the only market-implied percentage anyone has published is 81%, dated 9 October: four weeks old, predating the US election and an 8% collapse in crude. The vote has no percentage at all — second instance in three days after the RBA hiked 6–3 with no feed quoting a margin. The arithmetic is on the record: September was 6–3 to hold, with Greene, Mann and Pill already voting for 4%, so two of the six named holders must switch, and the outcome distribution runs from 5–4 to 9–0 under one headline. Two of our own open items close at the issuer: the Bank confirms a Monetary Policy Report lands in the same minute, and the BLS confirms tomorrow's payrolls at 8:30 a.m. ET. The Bank prints "12pm" with no time zone on two pages and no time at all on the calendar page you would build from, while four secondary readers all carry 12:00 UTC. Gilts rallied hardest of any major sovereign into the hike — 5.129% and −13.2bp on one reader, 5.1368% and −11.1bp on another, and a third frozen nine sessions back at 5.3484%. And one Tokyo wire quantifies the dovish case: sticky central inflation flat at 3.3% while markets price four more hikes.

Every Expiry on Today's Board Dies Before Its Own Event.

The option expiry board opened after three slots of failing to read one, and the three strikes we had been carrying unconfirmed are on it: 158.00, 157.85 and 157.00.

The structural point is less comfortable. Roughly seven billion dollars of dollar-yen notional, three and a quarter billion euros, nearly two billion pounds and almost five billion Australian dollars expire at the 14:00 UTC cut — and the Australian quarterly CPI, the RBNZ decision, the UK Budget and the Federal Reserve all come after it. Not one of the four boards expires after the event in its own currency. The yen board is the only one sitting on the market: 78.4 per cent of its 6.979 billion dollars sits in the fifty pips from 157.50 to 158.00, spot is inside that band at 157.76, the biggest strike is 2.1 billion at 157.85 nine pips up, and the session high at 157.89 has already traded four pips through it. The euro board is the opposite: all four strikes are above a 1.1142 spot, the nearest by thirty-three pips, three and a quarter billion euros the market has walked away from. A system treating "large expiries today" as one state variable gets those two wrong in opposite directions. And the Aussie board is the finding: 4.969 billion Australian dollars, with 2.1 billion at 0.6975, is extinguished ten and a half hours before a quarterly inflation print and eleven before a New Zealand decision. Whoever has a reason to defend those strikes loses it at 14:00, and the event arrives into a book that has just lost five billion dollars of gamma.

Britain Beat a Consensus of Minus 0.1, in the Minute London Opened

UK monthly GDP for August printed at plus 0.1 per cent at 06:00 UTC.

One vendor's calendar carried a consensus of minus 0.1; Deutsche Bank, on 8 October over two named economists, had it flat at zero. The print cleared the entire published expectation range we could read - two tenths above the lower, one above the higher. It also landed in the minute the London session opens, so the release and the open are not separable in anything sterling did afterwards. Three things nobody is saying: the issuer announced a month ago that this is the release reopening the full time series to revision, so the 0.4 prior in your calendar row may not have survived the print it is being scored against; the issuer states no release time and no timezone on its bulletins, so the 06:00 is a vendor's field; and at a quarter past six the issuer's own standing link was still serving July. Industrial production at plus 0.8 and manufacturing at plus 1.2 had no published consensus at all, which means neither can be a beat.

Four Surprises Moved Nothing. A $69 Billion Auction Cleared 47 Basis Points Higher.

The CBI beat by 24 points and sterling made a new September low.

Australia's manufacturing PMI fell into contraction at 49.3 and AUD/USD sat at 0.7115. Iran offered to reopen Hormuz and the yen round-tripped fifty pips. The only directional information all session came from a $69bn two-year auction that scored in line on every demand metric — and cleared 47.2 basis points above July's.
