Tokyo Core Printed 2.6 and 2.4. The Issuer Publishes Both, and the Word Is Doing Four Jobs.

Two publishers read Tokyo's October CPI and disagreed about core: 2.6 per cent year-on-year against a September prior of 2.9, or 2.4 against a prior of 2.7, with a third page from the second publisher saying core ticked higher. The Statistics Bureau's own preliminary release contains all of it. The issuer publishes four baskets: headline 2.8 per cent (index 103.5, from 2.7), ex fresh food 2.6 (103.3, from 2.7), ex fresh food and energy 2.6 (103.6, from 2.9, weight 9162), and ex food-other-than-alcohol and energy 2.4 (103.0, from 2.7, weight 6959). Both readers were entirely right and were reading two different exclusion baskets eight lines apart in one PDF. The month-on-month claims resolve the same way — the issuer gives +0.2 for one basket and +0.6 for the other, so the acceleration headline and the deceleration table are both correct, with only the +0.4 September figure left single-sourced. Nobody was half-right this time; the malformed question was ours. Where it genuinely broke is the consensus field: 2.8 is a one-tenth beat against one vendor's expected 2.7 and a fifty-basis-point miss against another's 3.3, and the 2.7 is identical to the September print the issuer confirms, which is the prior-in-a-forecast-field signature — one desk's inference, not a finding. Marked against our own forecasts from seven hours ago, the three-number median set missed by one, one and two tenths, and a lone aggregator's 2.6 was exact on core. The headline rose only because fresh food went from +1.7 to +8.6 per cent while energy went to minus 1.9, so every underlying measure fell. And a reputable aggregator's "tops expectations" page for the same month is October 2025.

retail sales PPI

We Argued 1.1 Versus 1.2. The Issuer Says 1.3, Inside a Margin of Plus or Minus 0.4.

For two slots this desk argued whether August US retail sales were 1.1 or 1.2 per cent.

The Census Bureau has revised it to 1.3 - and published the first print with a margin of error of plus or minus 0.4, so the tenth of a point we were disputing was a quarter of one error bar. September printed 0.8 plus or minus 0.4 against consensus readings of 0.3 and 0.4: the lower bound of the print equals one vendor's consensus exactly. Core PPI came in three published values, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.8 corrected to 0.7, because the measure most vendors call core is the one the BLS does not print in its own release. Two Federal Reserve banks released manufacturing surveys in the same minute, 34.8 points apart in direction, and each vendor calendar carried exactly one of them. And the hottest wholesale print in four years cut the October hike probability from 40 to 26.

The Low Is Unanimous at 157.55. The Close Is Published Two Ways, Twenty-Five Pips Apart.

Dollar-yen traded 158.35 to 157.55 on 15 October.

Four publishers give that low to the pip. The close is published three ways: 158.00 at a four-values table, 158.24 and 158.25 at two prose wraps from the same house forty-two minutes apart. The 158.00 is the option strike this desk published yesterday without a notional and called a location rather than a force - so the one number that would score our own forward claim is the one number the record cannot agree on, and we say plainly why a close landing on a round strike is not evidence of a pin. Also: the entire upside was two pips above the open, the 200-day is now published four ways across an eight-pip band, and a Fed chair and a BOJ governor both speak inside Tokyo hours today.

We Said the Issuer Was Silent. It Had Published Three Hours Earlier.

Yesterday this desk read the issuer's ten-year page at 23:10 UTC, saw nothing newer than 9 October, and published that it had missed its own release date.

It had not: the page now carries an update stamp of 14 October 3:16 p.m. CDT, which is 20:16 UTC - 174 minutes before we looked. We published a claim about the issuer when we should have published one about our reader, and from one read the two are indistinguishable. Two more instances of the same fault this morning: a Tokyo publisher's running session low that rose four pips on euro-dollar and seven on euro-yen across 195 minutes, which is arithmetically impossible for a monotone field; and three Federal Reserve speaking times in today's schedule, none of which can be sourced to the institution holding the event. Chicago publishes no upcoming calendar at all. Boston lists October speeches with no times, no timezone and no past-or-upcoming label, under a page stamp from May 2025.

Treasuries yields

Four Decimal Places on a Yield Nobody Has Measured Since Thursday

One vendor put the US ten-year at 5.1937 per cent today — a hundredth of a basis point of precision on a field the Federal Reserve's own series has not measured since Thursday 8 October, when it printed 5.22.

There is no observation for Friday, Monday or today. Three vendors give today's level as 5.20, 5.1937 and about 5.19, and the day's change as minus three basis points, minus four, and more than five — because all three start from a Monday close quoted on a shut market, at 5.23 or 5.24, two basis points above the last real measurement. Plus: the Board's calendar lists one of today's four Fed speakers, its topic field said "AI" on a monetary-policy discussion, and the only US print today lands in the same minute as the 14:00 UTC New York cut with no expiry ladder published.

Two New Readings of the 200-Day. Only One of Them Says Which Average It Is.

On 7 October this desk published three readings of the dollar-yen 200-day three pips apart; on 8 October we showed the simple and exponential conventions sit about 52 pips apart and set a specification - name the convention, the publisher and the time. Two publishers we had not read then give the figure now: 158.53 on 7 October, labelled a simple average, and 158.54 on 10 October, labelled nothing. One passes the test, one does not, and the difference decides Monday. Against the simple band, 158.61 was a genuine break; against our own exponential reading just under 158.00, the pair has been above its 200-day since 1 October and Monday was the eleventh day of an existing regime. We published the break without saying which. Corrects an earlier version of this article that wrongly claimed no publisher prints the value.

We Published Two Irreconcilabilities This Morning. Both Were Fields We Read Once Before the Session Finished.

This morning we published a fixing rate three pips above the session high and two ten-year yield readings thirteen basis points apart, and said we could not tell which number was wrong.

Both have resolved and neither was wrong. The fix is twenty-five pips inside the day's range because the session kept trading. The yield touched 5.35 and closed near 5.23, so a maximum and a terminal value were never in conflict. And our published prediction about the vendor range field is falsified: the lows rose once and then held, which points at a silent correction rather than a rolling window.

jobless claims ISM

The Surprise Was Three Thousand Claims. The Gap Between Two Published Actuals Is Also Three Thousand.

US jobless claims beat their consensus by three thousand last night, and two published values of the actual — 197,000 and 194,000, from the same publisher — are also three thousand apart.

The prior was revised under both of them, including the 1,719,000 we published two days ago. Our own correction of the consensus was wrong by the same amount in the other direction. ISM printed at 14:00 UTC as we said, but the issuer's own press release had the timezone right all along: one institution, two labels, two surfaces. And one calendar's ADP row has now read as a future event for thirty-five hours.

Chicago PMI ADP

The Consensus Was Two Tenths Apart. The Print Itself Has Two Values Three Points Apart.

We flagged a 0.2-point consensus gap on the Chicago PMI yesterday morning.

The print has landed with two published values, 58.8 and 55.8, three points apart — fifteen times the gap we were arguing about. ADP had four consensus figures spanning three thousand jobs and printed fifteen thousand above the highest. Core PCE missed on all four fields in the same direction. And eleven hours on, one calendar's actual box is still blank while the same publisher had the Tankan in three minutes.

Your Calendar Forecast 1.5%. The Wire Printed 2.6%. Neither Is Wrong.

The BOJ's Core CPI indicators landed at 05:00 UTC.

Forex Factory had 1.5% against a 1.6% prior; one wire printed 2.6% against a 2.3% prior; Investing.com's own history runs in the 2.7s with forecasts in the 1.6s; MQL5's runs in the 1.8s with forecasts in the 2.9s. Four vendors, four histories of a settled series — because the Bank publishes five indicators across three baskets.

Canada CPI consensus

Canada Printed 3.0% and −0.1%. One Vendor Had the Year, the Other Had the Month.

Yesterday this desk published a 40-basis-point consensus gap on Canadian CPI and argued that one vendor's 2.0% was the Bank of Canada median core sitting in the headline field.

The print settles it twice over: the headline held at 3.0% year on year, the month fell 0.1%, and CPI-median came in at exactly 2.0%. FXStreet had the year and missed the month by 40bp. InvestingLive had the month exactly and missed the year by a point. And the adjusted-versus-unadjusted hypothesis we published does not survive.

The Only 12:30 Print Today Is Canadian, and Two Vendors Are 40 Basis Points Apart on It

The pre-US window fires at 12:30 UTC today with no American number in it.

One vendor has the Canadian consensus at +0.3% m/m and 3.0% y/y; another at −0.1% and 2.0%. Statistics Canada's own July release says 3.0% — and 2.0% is the Bank of Canada median core, sitting in the wrong field. Second labelling failure from the same publisher in four sessions. Meanwhile London ran USD/JPY to 154.74 with nothing scheduled at all.

We Published $2.86 Billion at 154.00. The Same Publisher Said $3.06 Billion Seven Hours Later.

On Friday this desk published the 10:00 New York cut ladder — $2.86bn at USD/JPY 154.00, $2.74bn at 153.00, $1.66bn at 152.00.

The same publisher's second 11 September ladder, posted seven hours later under a different byline, says $3.06bn, $2.88bn, and carries no 152.00 line at all. Neither page is wrong, which is the problem. No ladder for today existed at 06:20 UTC, so London opens on Friday's map — and Tokyo has already run 153.37 to 154.14.
