Switzerland CPI

Europe Was Not Empty: Swiss Inflation Printed 1.5% Seventy-Four Minutes After We Said It Was.

At 06:16 UTC this desk published that, on two independent readings, the European calendar had nothing on it today.

Seventy-four minutes later Switzerland printed October CPI at 1.5% year-on-year — the highest in almost three years, above every economist in a Bloomberg survey and above both published consensus figures, 1.2% on one calendar and 1.3% on another. France published a budget balance at 07:45, Britain auctioned a ten-year gilt at 10:00, Germany a five-year at 10:30, and six ECB officials speak today. The issuer gives +0.2% on the month and an index of 101.7 on a December 2025 base, with heating oil, petrol and diesel named as drivers — and no prior, no consensus, no core rate and no release time anywhere on the page. Scored by field the release did three different things: the headline beat by two or three tenths, the month-on-month beat by two tenths and no secondary reader published it at all, and core was exact at 0.5%, so the entire surprise sits in the component core removes. Our failure was not too few aggregators but two of the same kind: both were FX week-aheads organised by currency bloc, and neither tabulated Switzerland. We attached the correct humility label and it documented the error rather than preventing it. Tonight four rows print at 15:00 in the same minute as the New York cut, with job openings consensus 34 thousand apart across three readers and two revision rows whose forecast equals their prior — the shape we got right yesterday morning and then misread by the evening.
